Introduction
An unexpected encounter between a tourist and a caiman over 2 meters long at Balneário da Amizade, between Álvares Machado and Presidente Prudente, in the west of São Paulo, drew a lot of attention. Sales manager Emanuel Gazola, 38, spotted the animal resting on a sandbank during a boat tour.
The Encounter
In a conversation with g1, Gazola talked about the moment he met the caiman and his reaction. 'The photo was taken in the middle of the reservoir, on a sandbank, where the spring of the balneário is, near the Estrada da Amizade. I wasn't scared, but I was impressed with the size of the animal. I've seen several other caimans in reservoirs and rivers, but not this big', he said.
Expert Comments
According to biologist and professor André Gonçalves Vieira, finding the animal in the reservoir is not new, as it is connected to other water bodies, one of which is the Rio Santo Anastácio, which flows into the Rio Paraná. 'It's a natural corridor for these animals. We must be aware that this animal is at the top of the food chain and has few natural predators. Accidents between people and caimans are not common and can occur in some cases, such as self-defense, defense of young, and defense of food', argued Vieira.
Risks and Precautions
Biologist Luiz Waldemar de Oliveira stated that the photographed animal is a yellow-bellied caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and that the species is common in the region. 'These sightings are significant, indicating a recovery of the population of this species in our region. Generally, individuals move to new habitats, dispersal, to establish new populations', mentioned the biologist.
About the Species
The yellow-bellied caiman can reach 3 meters in length, but this size is rare. It usually measures between 1.5 and 2 meters. It is a greenish, almost brownish animal, with a yellowish belly and a narrow, flat snout. The snout is smaller than that of other species. And behind the head, it still has scales in cervical rows.
Conclusion
The encounter between the tourist and the caiman at Balneário da Amizade is a reminder of the importance of respecting and preserving nature. It is essential to understand that these animals are part of our ecosystem and that we must take precautions to avoid accidents and ensure harmonious coexistence between humans and caimans.
