The Beginning of an Environmental Journey
In 2016, Mongabay Latam began publishing news with the goal of establishing a sustainable environmental news service for Spanish-speaking Latin America. The editorial team would be led by regional editors, working with journalists who understood the places they covered, and developing their own editorial priorities in response to local conditions.
Over the next decade, the Mongabay Latam team and its collaborators built this editorial team. They developed a daily news service that covered forests, oceans, wildlife, science, indigenous rights, environmental crime, and the people responding to ecological changes. They formed over 90 partnerships with national newspapers, regional publications, and independent media, allowing stories to reach audiences far beyond Mongabay's own platforms.
PUMA FEST: A Community Gathering
Last month, in Bogotá, the strength of what the team created was visible in another form. To mark its tenth anniversary, Mongabay Latam hosted PUMA FEST, a gathering organized with the Gabo Foundation before the 14th Gabo Festival. About 700 people registered, and 400 attended in person. Journalists, editors, indigenous communicators, students, scientists, and others participated in this event.
Why This Matters
PUMA FEST and Mongabay Latam's work are important because they show the importance of collaboration and community engagement in protecting the environment. Building partnerships and promoting investigative journalism are fundamental to exposing environmental crimes and promoting ecological justice.
The Mechanism Behind Mongabay Latam's Success
Mongabay Latam's success is due to its innovative and collaborative approach. By working with local journalists and editors, the organization can develop stories that are relevant and important to the communities they serve. Additionally, partnerships with other organizations allow Mongabay Latam to reach a wider audience and have a more significant impact.
Larger Context
Mongabay Latam's work is part of a larger movement of environmental journalism and ecological justice. As the world faces increasingly complex environmental challenges, the importance of robust and independent environmental news coverage has never been greater. PUMA FEST and Mongabay Latam's work are a reminder that collaboration and community engagement are fundamental to protecting the planet.
