Introduction
The increase in electricity prices in Europe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led consumers to look for ways to save. One popular option was plug-in solar panels, a cheap and easy-to-install renewable energy system that started to appear on store shelves.
Germany is currently the global leader in plug-in solar panels, with about 1 million systems installed, according to official records. However, it is likely that there are many more systems that have not been counted by utilities and local governments.
Benefits and Drawbacks
The benefits of plug-in solar panels are clear. An entry-level system costs about $500 to $1,000 and can be installed in a backyard, balcony, or roof. The electricity is connected to the house through a standard outlet, helping to offset the electricity that is drawn from the grid. The low cost makes solar energy accessible to people who cannot afford to spend $10,000 or more on a rooftop system installed by an electrician.
However, the financial benefits are small, starting at about $15 per month in the United States. It may be more financially sensible to spend the cost of plug-in solar panels on insulation, air sealing, or other basic measures to reduce energy use.
Analysis with Craig Morris
To help weigh the benefits against the concerns, I spoke with Craig Morris, CEO of Bundesverband Steckersolar, the German plug-in solar trade association. He is a U.S. native who has spent his adult life working as a clean energy advocate and researcher in Germany.
“The distinctive thing about this technology is that it’s so small that you don’t need an electrician to plug it in,” he said in a video interview from Berlin.
Conclusion
Plug-in solar panels offer an opportunity for more people to invest in the clean energy transition. While the financial benefits are small, the technology is cheap and easy to install, making it accessible to a wider audience. However, it is essential to consider the drawbacks and weigh the benefits against the concerns.
