Introduction
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is leading an innovative initiative called Code for Earth 2026, supported by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), Destination Earth, and other partners.
This program aims to drive open-source innovation in the Earth sciences community, supporting developments in areas such as weather forecasting, atmosphere, and climate.
Get Involved – and submit your proposal by 9 April 2026
The Call for Participation for the 2026 edition is open, and we are inviting developers, data enthusiasts, and experts from Earth sciences (weather forecasting, climate, atmosphere), computer science, and software engineering to participate and choose your project.
In 2026, the program features 16 challenges across four thematic streams:
- A Data Visualization and Visual Narratives stream for Earth science applications
- A stream focused on Machine Learning and AI for weather, climate, and atmospheric sciences
- A stream on Software Development and Open-Source Tools for Earth system science
- And, for the first time, an Africa stream, with co-designed challenges with regional partners to support capacity development and innovation in Africa
