Clean power was world's largest source of new energy in 2025
According to the latest Energy Institute statistical review of world energy, clean power was the world's largest source of new energy in 2025, surpassing all other sources of energy.
The Energy Institute is a professional organization that produces the annual statistical review of energy, which was previously produced by oil firm BP.
The review shows that electricity demand is rising more quickly than overall energy use, with a 3% increase in 2025, while overall energy use increased only 1.7%.
All new energy supplies came from low-carbon sources.
The review also highlights that data centers used 788 terawatt-hours of energy in 2025, which represents 2% of global energy demand.
China is the world's largest electricity generator, surpassing the US, EU, and India combined.
The Energy Institute expects the electricity sector to continue playing an important role in the future, as it is growing more quickly than other parts of the global energy system.
The COP31 presidency called on countries to back a global goal of 35% of final energy coming from electricity by 2035, against a global average of around 22%.
China is ahead of the global average, with electricity making up 30% of its final energy needs in 2025.
China recently adopted a 35% by 2030 target for electrification.
One of the reasons China was able to achieve this goal is the enormous scale of its energy system.
China now generates more electricity than the US, EU, and India combined.
Clean power met all of the growth in global electricity demand in 2025, which is a sign that clean power is becoming an increasingly important source of energy.
