What Happened
A innovative initiative in the Brazilian Amazon is changing the way wild animals cross roads, significantly reducing mortality caused by traffic. Researchers in the Alta Floresta region, in the north of the state of Mato Grosso, installed eight canopy bridges in 2024 to allow arboreal animals to cross above traffic.
These bridges, equipped with several layers of rope to accommodate different forms of movement, were a success. In 15 months, camera traps recorded around 15,000 animal crossings without a single case of roadkill in the monitored locations. Six primate species used the structures, including the black-faced black spider monkey (Ateles chamek), the Schneider's marmoset (Mico schneideri), and the Alta Floresta titi monkey (Plecturocebus grovesi), which is critically endangered.
Why It Matters
The construction of roads through Brazilian forests divides primate habitats and sometimes forces animals that normally stay in the canopy to descend to the ground, increasing the risk of being run over. Additionally, roads can separate wildlife populations and reduce gene flow, which can have long-term consequences for biodiversity.
The canopy bridge initiative not only helps mitigate these impacts but also provides valuable insights into animal behavior and how they interact with these structures. The fact that some species, such as the howler monkeys, took seven months to start using one of the bridges, suggests that it may take time for animals to get used to the new routes.
The Mechanism Behind It
The success of the canopy bridges is based on an understanding of the behavior and needs of arboreal animals. By providing a safe and suitable route for these animals to cross roads, the bridges significantly reduce the risk of collisions with vehicles.
The presence of several layers of rope on the bridges allows different species to use them in distinct ways. While some animals walk on the ropes, others use their arms or prehensile tails to move. This adaptation to different forms of locomotion is crucial for the success of the bridges.
Broader Context
This initiative is part of a broader effort to mitigate the impacts of roads on wildlife. A previous project, started in 2021 along the BR-174 highway, which passes through the Waimiri-Atroari Indigenous Territory, resulted in the installation of 32 bridges with the help of the Waimiri-Atroari community.
In these bridges, cameras recorded around 1,250 primate crossings over the last five years, providing valuable data on which designs are most effective. These efforts demonstrate the importance of collaboration between researchers, local communities, and protected area managers to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
